Project example: Remotely monitoring mine site
Objective:
Coordinate a drone monitoring program, process imagery and analyse to produce temporal metrics on landscape function.
How:
TerraLab designed and coordinated a drone monitoring program at a large mine site undergoing rehabilitation. Another contractor performed the flights following our methodology. Images were captured in RGB and near infrared (NIR). Images were processed into a Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) map and zonal statistics used to determine NDVI values across the image.
Result:
A relationship between NDVI and landscape function was derived to predict landscape function from NDVI datasets. This allowed the contractors and clients to perform rapid drone surveys using NIR cameras and get an updated snapshot of their landscape function. Previously their ground-based surveys were only conducted annually. The simplicity of this workflow allowed for greater temporal resolution in their monitoring.
Project Example: Tree density monitoring
Objective:
Evaluate areas of low density in a carbon offset planting.
How:
We processed imagery supplied by a contractor into a range of products. Locations of trees were plotted and areas of low density were automatically detected.
Result:
Areas less than 500 plants per hectare were able to be automatically derived from the drone data and its subsequent products. These areas were not meeting the requirements of the carbon planting. The methods used were objective and repeatable so there were no disputes.
